Homeschool Information Junkie - Part 1

There are many resources to consider when looking for information on homeschooling your children. With ever increasing time limitations, you have to choose where and how you want to invest your time wisely.

This series of articles will discuss where you can find homeschool information, and more importantly, how to use this information to best serve you in your homeschool journey.

In Part 1 of Homeschool Information Junkie, I am going to discuss homeschool magazines. For anyone starting out homeschooling this is the first place you should begin gathering information as there are seasoned professionals in every facet of these types of publications.

Homeschool magazines provide marvelous anytime reading enjoyment and inspiration to keep you going. You can find essentially find any homeschool topic, learn how other successful homeschool families operate, find a multitude of homeschool resources, lesson plans, and find support for every aspect of your homeschool journey.

Below are the major home school magazines. Some are free, some charge a fee, but all are worth reading, particularly if you are a homeschool information junkie!

Classical Homeschooling Magazine

Classical Homeschooling Magazine, in four amazing issues, has managed to tackle the homeschooling renaissance of classical education from A to Z. All 4 issues are in depth, online, and discuss the primary importance of the family to education. Whether you are just getting started or you've been homeschooling for a long time, this magazine has a ton of information.

Everything Homeschooling

Everything for Homeschooling provides a monthly online homeschool magazine. They charge a nominal fee and bring you articles, how-to's, and fresh homeschool information every month. In addition, they provide daily updates, weekly lessons, homeschool tips, and homeschool news, curriculum planning, hands-on activities, and virtual field trips.

Family Times Magazine

Home Education Magazine is the oldest and most respected of the homeschool magazines. They provide content in print as well as online for a nominal fee. Featuring homeschooling information, support, resources and reviews, free newsletters, networking and discussion lists. In addition, HEM offers an impressive online archive containing 10 years of articles, interviews, columns, resources, reviews, and more which you can read for free.

Home School Digest

Home School Digest is a quarterly journal for family discipleship. Content is provided both online and in print for a nominal annual fee. Inside, you'll find homeschool tips, and much more to strengthen, encourage, and equip you in your journey of homeschooling and raising godly children.

Home School Enrichment

Home School Enrichment magazine is a bi-monthly issue available in print for a nominal annual fee. Featuring homeschool encouragement, enrichment ideas for your homeschool, practical teaching ideas, complete unit studies, and fun and enriching projects.

Homeschooling Horizons

Canada's homeschooling magazine online is published 10 times per year and available in print and online for a nominal fee. Featuring articles, tips, activities, stories, website reviews, and much more.

Homeschooling Parent

Homeschooling Parent is a bi-monthly magazine available online and in print for a nominal fee. Featuring interest stories, curriculum and teaching tools, family matters, travel, camps, colleges & universities, distance learning, and much more.

Homeschooling Today

Homeschooling Today is an online and in print magazine focusing on not only the mechanics of homeschooling, but also the mission and metrics of homeschooling. Featuring everything from unit studies and literature reviews to encouragement for mothers and leadership for fathers.

Jewish Home Educator's Network

JHEN is a newsletter published every quarter providing information on a wide range of topics. You'll find recipes, creative holiday and craft ideas, book reviews, a Jewish calendar with information and original ideas, and help columns with practical how-to advice on homeschooling.

Learners Online

Learners Online is a monthly publication available both online and in print. Each monthly issue gives you the knowledge and tools you need to integrate online content with traditional home and classroom learning-over 40 pages of great educational resources, activities, and lesson plans each month.

Life Learning Magazine

Life Learning Magazine provides a bi-monthly publication available both online and in print. They provide information and inspiration about unschooling and natural parenting. They also have an extensive archive of magazines accessible online dating back to 2002.

Practical Homeschooling

Practical Homeschooling is available in print and can be ordered online. They provide detailed product reviews, special features, reports of homeschoolers around the globe, news, and articles written by nationally known columnists. There are also contests and prizes in every issue.

The Link

The Link offers homeschool news on a variety of topics available for free online and in print. There is a wealth of information on this site and countless resources to absorb.

The Teaching Home

The Teaching Home is a Christian magazine for home educators. They offer a homeschool newsletter and an archive of past publications. For 26 years they have provided support to home school educators from a Christian perspective.

Once you find the magazines that have the best "feel" for what your interests are, start subscribing and educate yourself on the latest topics affecting homeschool families.

What can you do with the new found knowledge you have gained from homeschool magazines? Well, besides applying what you've learned in your own home, my suggestion would be to blog about it. Let's face it, everyone wants to blog in a meaningful and interesting way but it is hard for some of us to find something interesting to talk about. Not only will you gain knowledge for your own homeschooling experience, but you just may be surprised at how many other people you can help with this information.

We are all hungry for knowledge, why else would we homeschool? Satisfy your hunger and build your confidence! Once you are confident you've learned something inspiring, blog about it. Whether it be an interesting homeschool article, a neat new product, or an amazing website, blog about it. Share your excitement of learning with others and your enthusiasm will shine through.
